A romantic Kauai getaway in January or February trades the coldest weeks of your year for warm water, green cliffs, whale season and a resort base on the sunnier south shore. Go if you two want rest more than a packed schedule, and you don't mind a passing shower.
By the middle of January most couples we talk to are tired in a particular way. The holidays are over, the grandkids have gone home, and the driveway needs shoveling again. That's the week to be on Kauai.
Kauai is the oldest and greenest of the main Hawaiian islands, and it's quieter than Maui or Oahu. There are no high-rise skylines, the roosters wander through parking lots, and the best evening plan is usually watching the sun go down with something cold to drink.
This is a resort trip, and we mean that as a compliment. You pick one good base, you stop packing and unpacking, and you spend a week paying attention to each other instead of a phone.
Why Kauai works for couples at this stage
After twenty or thirty years of marriage, a lot of trips turn into logistics. Kauai is small enough that the logistics mostly disappear. The main highway runs most of the way around the island before the Na Pali cliffs stop it, and there's no nightlife to feel guilty about skipping.
What's left is time. Long breakfasts on a lanai. A walk on the beach at Poipu before it gets warm. An afternoon nap you don't have to justify. Couples tell us the thing they want most is a chance to reconnect without an agenda, and this island is built for exactly that pace.
Why January and February
The obvious reason is the weather back home. Kauai in winter usually sits in the high 70s during the day, cooler at night, with ocean water that's still comfortable for swimming on the south shore. It's also humpback whale season, roughly December through April, and January and February are often the busiest months for sightings. You'll see spouts from the beach if you're patient.
Now the honest part. Winter is Kauai's rainy season, and the north shore takes the brunt of it. Big winter swells roll into Hanalei and the beaches along that coast, and swimming there can be dangerous for weeks at a time. The south shore around Poipu is usually drier and calmer, which is why we base couples there. Rain is also why the island looks the way it does. Mount Waialeale, in the middle of Kauai, is one of the wettest spots on earth, and all those waterfalls come from somewhere.
Presidents Day week and the stretch around New Year's are busier and pricier. Mid-January and early February tend to be easier.
What you'll actually do
Book the Na Pali coast sunset sail first. In winter these boats usually leave from Port Allen on the west side, since the north shore seas are too rough. You'll cruise up past the cliffs and sea caves, often with whales along the way, and come back under a sky that turns orange and then pink. It's the one splurge on the trip we'd never cut.
Waimea Canyon deserves a morning. Drive up early, before clouds settle in, and stop at the lookouts on the way to Kokee State Park. The red and green walls drop a long way down, and the air is noticeably cooler up top, so bring a layer.
Save one clear day for the north shore. Hanalei town is worth the drive for the one-lane bridges, the taro fields in the valley and the pier on Hanalei Bay. Just treat the ocean there as something to look at in winter, not swim in.
- Spouting Horn, a blowhole near Poipu that's best when the surf is up
- Allerton Garden near Poipu, seen on a guided tour
- Shave ice in the afternoon, and fresh poke from a local market for a beach picnic
- Kilauea Lighthouse on the north shore (check if a reservation is needed)
A sample week
This is a loose plan, not a schedule. Leave at least two days with nothing on them at all.
- Day 1: Land in Lihue, drive south to Poipu, early dinner, early bed.
- Day 2: Sleep in. Beach and pool. Watch for whales at sunset.
- Day 3: Waimea Canyon and Kokee in the morning, lunch in Waimea town.
- Day 4: Nothing planned. Seriously.
- Day 5: North shore day: Kilauea, Hanalei, lunch in town, back before dark.
- Day 6: Na Pali sunset sail from Port Allen.
- Day 7: Sunday worship, a long lunch, a slow last evening.
- Day 8: Pack, one more swim, fly home.
Where to stay and how to get around
Stay in one place. Kauai has no road around the Na Pali coast, so the north and south shores are separate drives, and moving hotels mid-week eats a whole day. In winter, Poipu is the right base for most couples: better odds of sun, calmer water and plenty of places to eat within a few minutes.
Ask for an ocean-view room on a higher floor. We'd pick the view over a bigger room every time here, because you'll spend your mornings on that lanai. A resort with a quiet adults pool helps, too. Rent a car. There's limited transit, and you'll want the freedom to chase a sunny patch when it rains on your side of the island.
Making room for faith
Kauai gives you an easy rhythm for devotions. The sun comes up over the ocean on the south and east shores, so a coffee and a psalm on the lanai before breakfast becomes a habit fast. Bring a small Bible or a devotional you both like, and take turns reading.
On Sunday, find a local congregation. Visitors are usually welcome, and some churches sing hymns in Hawaiian. The green wooden Waioli Huiia Church in Hanalei is a lovely old building if you're on the north shore that morning. Check current service times before you go.
Practical tips
Pack for rain as well as sun: a light rain jacket, reef-safe sunscreen, water shoes for rocky entries and a sweater for Waimea Canyon. Most of the famous hikes, including the Kalalau Trail, are steep, muddy and slick in winter. If knees or balance are a concern, the canyon lookouts and the flat beach walks at Poipu give you the views without the risk.
Some popular spots, like Haena State Park at the end of the north shore road, have required advance reservations, so check current rules before you set your heart on them. Don't try to see everything. Skip the helicopter tour if either of you gets queasy; the sunset sail shows you plenty.
Questions couples ask
Is January a good time to visit Kauai?
Yes, for most couples, as long as you stay on the south shore. January is whale season and the weather is usually warm, but it's also the rainy season and the north shore often has big, dangerous surf. Base yourselves in Poipu, plan north shore sightseeing for a clear day, and expect a few showers.
Which side of Kauai is best in winter?
The south shore, around Poipu, is usually best in winter. It tends to be sunnier and drier, and the water is generally calmer for swimming. The north shore around Hanalei and Princeville is beautiful but wetter, and winter swells can make its beaches unsafe for weeks.
How many days do you need in Kauai?
A week is the sweet spot for a romantic Kauai getaway. That's enough time for Waimea Canyon, a Na Pali sail and a north shore day, with two or three days left for doing nothing. Five nights can work, but the flight is long enough that a shorter stay feels rushed.
Can you see the Na Pali coast in winter?
Yes. Winter boat tours usually depart from Port Allen on the west side and head up the coast, since the north shore is too rough for boats then. A sunset sail is our favorite way to do it, and whales are often part of the show. Seas can still cancel a trip, so don't book it for your last day.
When is whale season on Kauai?
Humpback whales are usually around Hawaii from about December through April, and January through March is often the best stretch for sightings. You can see them from boats, from the Kilauea Lighthouse area, and sometimes from the beach at Poipu if you watch for spouts.
Can Covenant Retreats plan a Kauai trip for us?
Yes. We plan this as a private trip for two: resort and room choice, the car, the sunset sail, a sensible daily pace and a church for Sunday. It's also a trip we'd love to host as a small group retreat for couples. Tell us about the trip you want on our Plan With Us page and we'll plan it.
